This year, I will be participating in the MMRF Race for Research 5K Walk/Run.
My son was diagnosed in 2008 with a plasmacytoma (single tumor like the ones found in Multiple Myeloma) and had surgery to remove this baseball-sized cancerous tumor that was located at the base of his skull. He then required a cervical fusion (to strengthen his upper spine) because the tumor had weakened the base of his skull. After these two surgeries, he went through 5 weeks of radiation therapy. In May 2010, he was diagnosed (at age 28) with Multiple Myeloma (MM). Only 2-5% of the people diagnosed with MM are under the age of 40. He went through oral and then IV chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant in November 2010. He is currently in remission, but one thing known about MM is that it always comes back, it's just a matter of when.
MM is a cancer of one type of white blood cell. The prognosis, even after treatment, is 8 years. Just over 10 years ago, the prognosis was 6 months. Research has found many new treatments, and it is estimated that there will be a new medication to treat MM every two years. This not only gives someone with MM an additional treatment option, but additional combinations of medications to use for treatment.
My goal, with your help, is to make this a chronic disease and ultimately to find a cure! I hope that you will support my efforts and this wonderful organization.
The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) was established in 1998 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by twin sisters Karen Andrews and Kathy Giusti, soon after Kathy's diagnosis with multiple myeloma. The mission of the MMRF is to relentlessly pursue innovative means that accelerate the development of next-generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure. 90% of MMRF's total budget goes directly towards research and related programming.
Please help the fight against Multiple Myeloma by joining our team or donating!
