On April 28th, 2000 three weeks before our wedding, Matt was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. However, Matt did not let the diagnosis dampen his spirit or hamper his will to live. We were married on May 20th, 2000. Matt was the recipient of a bone marrow transplant on October 30, 2000. We were blessed. His only brother, James, was the donor.
Matt recovered from the transplant and went on to live a full life. He continued to work as a pianist and keyboardist in Chicago and throughout the U.S. In 2009, Matt travelled to Japan as a band member for Eddie Levert's solo gigs. Matt also travelled to South Africa to perform with his beloved O'Jays.
Matt loved children and mentoring young musicians. He was an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. As director of the Evelyn O. Gaston Memorial Children's Choir, he inspired the next generation to explore their musical talents. Matt also worked as a music teacher at Peck Elementary where he was able to engage even the most challenging student.
Matt was a passionate student of music. He graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a degree in music composition. In 2012, Matt enrolled in a graduate program in music education at St. Xavier University.
Sadly, Matt's battle ended on the afternoon of June 12th, 2014. However, his warm, compassionate spirit lives on through his music and our remembrance of our experience with this gentle soul.
Please honor Matt's memory by contributing to his memorial fund. Your donation will fund research to assist in finding a cure for multiple myeloma.
If you would like, you can add your name and a short message to our Guest Book. Thank you.
To a very talented musician and friend who was taken from us all too soon. RIP!!!

I worked with Mr. Rose at Peck School and always enjoyed his company and stories. I guarantee that the older students still remember the puppet he carried with him that helped him teach some of his lessons to the little ones. He was a great man, and he is missed.

Memories will always be with my family and me as my daughter Jacklyn and granddaughter Harmoni enjoyed the fruits of singing in the Children's Choir of St. Mark UMC with Matthew. May God be with the family of this incredible individual.

Matt was a great musician. He wrote charts for my group VocalPoynt and we have worked together thru the years on several music projects. We had kinda lost touch these past few years, I had heard he was sick but didn't know the seriousness of his illness. I just want to say my dear friend that you will truly be missed and I am thankful that in this lifetime are maker saw fit that our lives would cross. My condolences go out to your wife and family. Rest in Peace my dear brother.
